2011 saw Pegula buy the Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Bandits from its previous owners, Tom Golisano and Larry Quinn, for $189 million, taking over their holding company, Hockey Western New York, LLC, after the sale of assets from his East Resources natural gas company. The American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans were re-affiliated with the Sabres on June 24, 2011, following Pegula’s May 17, 2011 acquisition of the team from the Rochester Sports Group. Pegula paid US$5 million to the Americans.

Independent country music label Black River Entertainment was run by Pegula Sports and Entertainment. The label, which is situated in Nashville, Tennessee, is home to artists including Craig Morgan and Kelsea Ballerini in addition to Black River Publishing and Sound Stage Studio.
